The Role of the RCVS and Complaints Procedures
The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) is the regulatory body responsible for veterinary surgeons in the UK. In order to work as a veterinary surgeon in the UK, it is essential to be registered with the RCVS. The remit of the RCVS is set out in the Veterinary Surgeon Act 1966. The work of the RCVS is governed by this and other associated legislation.
When the RCVS can take action
The Procedure and Evidence Rules 2004 set out the procedural rules for disciplinary proceedings. This includes the standard of proof to be applied to by the Disciplinary Committee. The standard of proof is that the Disciplinary Committee should be “satisfied to the highest civil standard of proof so that it is sure” i.e. tantamount to the criminal standard of proof.
RCVS Sanction and Disposal options
- No further action
- Postponement of the judgment for a period not exceeding two years
- Reprimand or warning as to future conduct
- Direction for suspension of the respondent veterinary surgeon’s name from the register for a specific period not exceeding two years
- Direction for removal of the respondent veterinary surgeon’s name from the register.
